Compared to Korea, Universities in the U.S. have actively managed endowments. Now the college funds are tax exempted and half of poll respondents agree to keep the benefit. Still, majority think universities have positive influence around the area. However, college enrollment is getting more and more expensive so some people doubt universities may not need to have financial benefit.
I like the idea that universities have their own fund. Personally, my university was really poor in terms of their financial status, so the college management was seeking government support to operate the university. It was just like the university-entering government policy which is constantly changing and without any longer-run progress. So I always thought if a university have own fund and the fund is sufficient to generate extra income source for maintaining college, students could have better education focusing on our own future, not spending time on extra curricula activities coming along with the unreliable government policy. In this way, I envy university graduates from ones with longer histories.
Once, I dreamed to be a millionaire to donate to my university. I still think the students in the campus are a bit pity, but now I know they are having the most shiny moments in life. When I stayed in campus, there was no 24/7 convenience store-there was only one shop but closed at 11pm-, no bakeries, no nice food to eat, no SOCAR. but I had good friends to share dreams, streets to stroll, a chapel to sing a song. I talk like an old person. should stop here.
