[Essay Writing HW#5] Evacuation Scenario in case of an earthquake

초심독자 2019. 8. 11. 12:17

In November of 2017, an earthquake occurred in Pohang which registered 5.4 on the Richter scale. No one expected such a severe earthquake in Korea, with the exception of the Handong University students union. The university was noticed by the media because the students were evacuated in an amazingly perfect order. The Handong students demonstrated the effectiveness of regular emergency evacuation drills. An evacuation drill is so important because it can save lives in the event of an unforeseen disaster such as an earthquake. Here is a 3-step instruction set, for use in the event of an earthquake evacuation from an office.
First of all, you must hide under your desk or another stable and solid object. When an earthquake happens, items on the wall, or tall furniture like bookshelves, may fall down. Most injuries during an earthquake are the result of collapsed furniture or construction materials. While hidden, try to find your helmet and emergency backpack under your desk, and make sure you wear both of them. The helmet will keep your head safe on your way outside. The emergency backpack contains a whistle and a minimal amount of food and water. It may prove crucial in a situation where you are waiting to be rescued.
Once the ground stops shaking, it is time to run out of the building. Earthquakes have two separate phases, and there is a break time between the two phases. Before the next shake comes, walk down to the ground floor, using the stairs, with your helmet and backpack. It is important that you do not use elevators, as elevators might stop in the middle, or plunge underground, due to malfunctioning electricity. If you were an elevator during an earthquake, press the buttons for every floor, and escape when it opens. Also, leave the doors open when you escape. Open doors can assist rescue activity in the future.
The designated evacuation spot is the front yard of the Seoul Museum of History. Stay in the yard until the earthquake completely stops. While you are waiting at the evacuation spot, use text messages and SNS to contact your family and friends, instead of making calls. Phone calls may overload telecommunication traffic in the area. For everyone's sake, it is better to use text messages to keep in touch.
Earthquakes occur without prior notice. It cannot be more important to emphasize emergency drills in order to practice emergency action. In an earthquake, you have to wait under your desk until the first shake stops. During the first shake, put on your helmet and emergency backpack. Once the first shake pauses, escape the building using the stairs. Make sure you walk down the stairs, avoid using elevators. Lastly, stay in the evacuation spot until you are completely safe from further earthquakes. Following the earthquake scenario can keep you safe during an emergency.
